Bennelong Apartment

Architect: Scott Weston
Designer: Gregory Phillips
w: swad.com.au

The Bennelong Apartments sits on the western side of Circular Quay.

The kitchen is a cool white Marblo® solid surface and embossed silver ‘Abet’ laminate wall of integrated appliances with a counterpoint of a mirrored wall and splashback reflecting the harbour beyond giving the illusion of a larger living space. Linear uplights and concealed lighting wash the ceilings in light giving the effect of a more generously proportioned space as maximum ceiling height was only 2.4 metres.

Aim of the renovation: To breath new life into a fifteen-year-old apartment for a Client that spends six months of the year in Sydney and remaining in her villa in Tuscany.

The Solution: To refurbish an apartment with low ceiling heights, insufficient storage and awkward angular floor plan into a simple elegant design where all the architectural joinery define rooms and cleverly conceal functional storage solutions.  A curved hero joinery wall in cerulean provides a counterpoint and dramatic backdrop to the harbour.

Biggest extravagance: We invested in Marblo® cladding panels that were custom coloured and thermo formed and became the concealed and dramatic walk-in pantry and laundry with electronic touch sensitive drawers and concealed lighting. It is not only the hero piece to the kitchen but a gracious curved ocean liner form to the greater open plan apartment.

Best advice: Don’t compromise on the materials, finishes and joinery hardware as quality is remembered long after price is forgotten. Invest in good quality lighting and trust the Architect.

Materials used: Chevron Oak parquetry, Marblo® Solid Surface joinery to kitchen, Abet silver laminate, Cleaf Matrix timber veneer joinery wardrobes, Laminex ‘Lamiwood’ joinery, Knoll fabrics and Phillip Jeffries ‘Japenese Silky Strings’ Wallpaper.
